Book Haul {October}

Well Happy Late Halloween everyone, it’s about a week into November and one step closer to Turkey day… yummm. Turns out waiting to do an October book haul was a great idea because at least three more books appeared before the 31st. So without further adieu, myself {As Freddy Kruger} will be guiding you through this large book haul.

Starting off this haul let’s begin with a couple horror themed YA novels that belong to The Asylum Series by Madeleine Roux

Escape from Asylum by Madeleine Roux Book #4 In the series but it also is the Prequel to book one. This Asylum novel takes you all the way back to when the Asylum was up and actually working, taking place years before book #1. It revolves around a teen forced to be admitted into the asylum the only problem is he is wrongfully committed and has to escape or end up being the wicked warden’s next experiment. Along with it being a creepy awesome read, it has great pictures that really give you a sense of the time, place and eeriness of the subject matter.

Asylum by Madeleine Roux Book #1 in The Asylum Series and Roux’s debut novel starts off with not only containing creepy photographs of asylums and everything that is contained within their deranged walls. Book One takes place after the asylum is converted to a dormitory for a prestigious college prep program, surrounding a teen boy and his friends who, turns out have some pretty eerier ties to the former hospital and the people inside.

Next up is a twisted fairy tale titled As Old as Time by Liz Braswell and created for the Disney cooperation. I love these novels, right now there are only a couple but this one revolves around Beauty and the Beast. My all time favorite fairytale. This time the tag line, “What if Belle’s mother cursed the Beast?” Now I love Liz because she also has written a few other fairy tale remakes I am obsessed with, check out two called Snow, and Beauty Sleep from the Once Upon a Time Series {Not the Tv show}. Anyway the premise, what if Belle’s mother was the enchantress that cursed the prince. I mean we never saw or really heard about her in the movie so.. I mean wow.. Also if you love twisted tales there are two more right now  you might want to check out (Once Upon a Dream: What if Sleeping Beauty never woke up. And A Whole New World: What if Aladdin never found the lamp?)

The Gilded Cage by Lucinda Gray, initially a cover buy lol, but I loved the synopsis so my lovely mother ended up grabbing it for me. I mean look at the cover its freaking gorgeous and the titled really grabbed me.  I would try summarizing the blub but cant do it justice so im just going to leave it here for you. “After growing up on a farm in Virginia, Walthingham Hall in England seems like another world to sixteen-year-old Katherine Randolph. Her new life, filled with the splendor of upper class England in the 1820s, is shattered when she discovers the corpse of her brother George in a lake on the estate-the tragic accidental drowning of a young man, the coroner reports, despite the wound to George’s head.Katherine is expected to observe the mourning customs and get on with her life, but she can’t accept that her brother’s death was an accident. A bitter poacher prowls the estate, and strange visitors threaten the occupants of the house. There’s a rumor, too, that a wild animal stalks the woods of Walthingham. Can Katherine retain her sanity long enough to find out the truth? Or will her brother’s killer claim her life, too?

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake. I initially saw this book talked about all over booktube and it was also the book in the September Owlcrate so I freaking had to check it out! Ok so the title pretty much says it all, on this island every generation triplets are born, three queens and each possess a different gift that would make them a formidable ruler. On there 16th birthday the three sisters begin the fight for the crown and their lives. Because only one of the three can rule.

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco. This  debut novel is an amazing horror novel surrounding a young privileged girl who ends up with a morbid fascination for forensic medicine, because of this she ends up working on a series of murders which will bring her close to Ripper and a infatuation for the gruesome man in the meantime.  Plus the cover is simply gorgeous, one of my all time favorite covers ever and the tagline on the back cover really sold it for me.

“I was the girl who loved the Ripper.”

Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter, a novel based on old Russian folklore. I received this amazing book in October’s Owlcrate. yes this is another time I will just share the blurb because I will end up writing spoilers lol

“In the enchanted kingdom of Brooklyn, the fashionable people put on cute shoes, go to parties in warehouses, drink on rooftops at sunset, and tell themselves they’ve arrived. A whole lot of Brooklyn is like that now—but not Vassa’s working-class neighborhood. In Vassa’s neighborhood, where she lives with her stepmother and bickering stepsisters, one might stumble onto magic, but stumbling out again could become an issue. Babs Yagg, the owner of the local convenience store, has a policy of beheading shoplifters—and sometimes innocent shoppers as well. So when Vassa’s stepsister sends her out for light bulbs in the middle of night, she knows it could easily become a suicide mission. But Vassa has a bit of luck hidden in her pocket, a gift from her dead mother. Erg is a tough-talking wooden doll with sticky fingers, a bottomless stomach, and a ferocious cunning. With Erg’s help, Vassa just might be able to break the witch’s curse and free her Brooklyn neighborhood. But Babs won’t be playing fair….”

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. Book one in The Illuminae Files series. Now this series I was lovingly introduced too on booktube by so many people. They are a sci-fi ya series that looks huge but hidden within the pages the story is written in emails, documents, files, you name it just not like a book. Its an amazing series that I am currently reading, will post a review on it soon.  so here is the blurb

“This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded .The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than a speck at the edge of the universe. Now with enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to evacuate with a hostile warship in hot pursuit.
But their problems are just getting started. A plague has broken out and is mutating with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a web of data to find the truth, it’s clear the only person who can help her is the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.
Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, maps, files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Last but not least, book two Gemina of the Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff.

Here’s the blurb…

“Moving to a space station at the edge of the galaxy was always going to be the death of Hanna’s social life. Nobody said it might actually get her killed.
The sci-fi saga that began with the breakout bestseller Illuminae continues on board the Jump Station Heimdall, where two new characters will confront the next wave of the BeiTech assault.
Hanna is the station captain’s pampered daughter; Nik the reluctant member of a notorious crime family. But while the pair are struggling with the realities of life aboard the galaxy’s most boring space station, little do they know that Kady Grant and the Hypatia are headed right toward Heimdall, carrying news of the Kerenza invasion.
When an elite BeiTech strike team invades the station, Hanna and Nik are thrown together to defend their home. But alien predators are picking off the station residents one by one, and a malfunction in the station’s wormhole means the space-time continuum might be ripped in two before dinner. Soon Hanna and Nik aren’t just fighting for their own survival; the fate of everyone on the Hypatia—and possibly the known universe—is in their hands.
But relax. They’ve totally got this. They hope.
Once again told through a compelling dossier of emails, IMs, classified files, transcripts, and schematics, Gemina raises the stakes of the Illuminae Files, hurling readers into an enthralling new story that will leave them breathless.

So there’s my October book haul, I know I cant wait to dig into these delicious tales and I hope maybe you have also read them or now want too. Please let me know what you think!! I will see you boils and ghouls later, Freddy Kruger out!! lol
