It took about a day and a half to finish this almost 500 page twisted version of Beauty and the Beast, my all time FAVORITE fairytale titled As Old as Time by Liz Braswell. It’s the third novel in the twisted tale series. So the new premise on this class is What if Belle’s mother cursed the Beast?
In this adaptation Belle’s mother, who we never really learned about in the Disney Classic is the beautiful enchantress who cursed the young prince and gave him the rose. Wow great concept right, well this adaptation is certainly not for the faint of heart. It is extremely dark and TWISTED. To be honest I wasn’t sure I was even going to finish this book at all when I initially began reading yesterday. It took, and im not joking about 200 pages to get to the core story and really hook me. Before then it was slow, and the flashbacks can get a bit boring. But once it got to where the story forked from the classic it’s unusual premise and dark, graphic sequences had me. Its a great retelling overall, I do suggest reading it is you love Belle and her Beast. Plus you can never have too much Lumiere and Cogsworth comradery. You also really get to delve deep into the Asylum briefly mentioned in the movie. I also highly!!! suggest The Beast Within by Serena Valintino if you want an amazing viewpoint retelling as well. So on to stars. I gave As Old as Time 3 out of 5 stars just because it took so long to really get into the main story and hook, and then the ending which I believe really needed an epilogue. And just FYI I gave The Beast Within 5 out of 5 stars if you want to check out that retelling as well. Even though I only gave it 3 stars, I do highly suggest it to all Beauty and the Beast fans because I did really love it.
