I picked up The Wrath & The Dawn book one in Renee Ahdieh’s duology yesterday. It’s a retelling about the classic story of Shahrzad, better known as 1,001 nights or Arabian nights. To give you a little more info here is the blurb:
“Every dawn brings horror to a different family in a land ruled by a killer. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, takes a new bride each night only to have her executed at sunrise. So it is a suspicious surprise when sixteen-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to marry Khalid. But she does so with a clever plan to stay alive and exact revenge on the Caliph for the murder of her best friend and countless other girls. Shazi’s wit and will, indeed, get her through to the dawn that no others have seen, but with a catch . . . she’s falling in love with the very boy who killed her dearest friend. She discovers that the murderous boy-king is not all that he seems and neither are the deaths of so many girls. Shazi is determined to uncover the reason for the murders and to break the cycle once and for all.”
I grew up with the story of the epic storyteller Shahrzad and Renee did an epic job retelling it in a new, gut wrenching, heart warming, deff it’s own beast type of way. The twists and plot turns had me entranced within the pages that took me a whole day to read. The characters are beautifully written and very loveable and relatable, along with her gift of painting the picture of the scene, even the smells of the food …. mouthwatering. Also thankfully it had a glossary because I needed it, I knew some of the terms but to keep it historically accurate and what not, it needed the terminology and guide. Overall I LOVE this series and gave book one 5 out of 5 stars, now I just have to wait in the mail for The Rose & The Dagger (Book 2) to keep loving Shazi and Khalid. Plus the hardback covers are GORGEOUS!!
